ReCork America, Wine Cork Recycling Gets Organized

When it comes to recycling most people don't think of the wine cork. Usually people either save them as mementos, turn them into trivets, bulletin boards or in one rare case a suit, or the simply place them back into the wine bottle and toss the bottle in the recycling bin. FOr personal consumption it's perhaps not that big an issue but when you are talking about restaurants and wine tasting rooms, that can be a lot of corks. ReCork America is a new recycling program sponsored by Amorim, a Portuguese cork manufacturer. The project began as a pilot program in Oregon is in place in many San Francisco businesses and restaurants and is spreading into Napa Valley, the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena recently came onboard. The plan is to eventually take cork recycling nationwide. Used corks can be recycled and remade into floor tiles, insulation, gardening products and more. According to an article in the Napa Valley Register, the biggest problem is logistics, if it takes more energy to pick up the corks than it negates the worth of the recycling. So far, this has been a grassroots program with people getting the word out and working to gather corks to deliver to collection centers as well as starting to brainstorm new uses for the recycled cork. For more information, visit the ReCork America website.

Plant A Billion Trees Project, Charity of the Day

The Atlantic forest in Brazil is considered one of the worlds most endangered tropical rain forests, with as little 7 percent of it's original area remaining! As we all know trees are quite literally the lungs of the earth, without their constant releasing of oxygen we would all be in trouble, what you may not know is that forests like the Atlantic also help regulate the earths climate and atmosphere. The Plant A Billion Trees Project plans to do just that...plant a billion trees in the Atlantic Forrest over the next 7 years, basically they are going to re-forest 2.5 billion acres of land. I write about charities every day and I can't think of one I've heard of that is more important than this amazing project! The facts are staggering, and so impressive, after the project is done 10 million tons of carbon dioxide will have been removed from our air, planting these trees will do the same thing as removing 2 million cars from the road!! I urge you to get involved with this powerful movement. One dollar equals one tree, so tell everyone you know! Plant a Billion Trees website.

One Buck for the Planet, Charity of the Day

We constantly hear about big givers, but today's charity One Buck for the Planet focuses on small giving, and lots of it. Based on the simple principal that if millions of people each give a dollar, huge change is possible. One Buck works with only the best green earth charities; the Surfrider Foundation, Trees for the Future, Conservation International and many more. They distribute all donations received to one of the groups they trust to get things done! They take the guess work out of donating for you, no need to spend time trying to figure out which charity to give to. So simple and easy...I love this charity. Who can't afford to give a dollar to help keep the earth healthy for generations to come. Pass the word on about this cool charity!

Meteor Table by Christa

Bring the woodsy outdoors charm into your home with this limited edition unique find. It's called the Meteor Table, it's made by Christa and it's an actual teak tree root that's been coated with bronze. Definitely a conversation starter in any home! I guess you can't rush such a ginormous and heavy package (750 pounds) via mail so it takes 6 months to arrive. Tree tables don't come cheap, this purchase will set you back $55,000! Of course I'm trying to figure out how I can start making these things! It's available on vivre.com, a very cool decor site.

InterContinental Hotel Group's Imaginary Green Hotel

Hotels all around the world are pushing hard to go green and tell their customers all about it. The InterContinental Hotels Group has created a whole website devoted to the project. The solar powered 'Innovation Hotel' will include a variety of green features including the forwarding of all unused non-perishable food to charities or food banks, solar panels on the roof to heat water, a rainwater harvesting system to supply water to toilets, a roof garden rich in shrubbery to provide extra insulation, windpower to generate electricity for the hotel, recycled glass windows, furniture and fittings made entirely from recycled materials and household waste to provide heat and power. The plan is to use the virtual property if the Innovation Hotel to gradually roll out to all HG brands within the next few years.

Th Innovation Hotel has a green roof planted with low-maintenance plants which helps keep it cool in warm weather and insulate it in winter. Also on the roof there will be solar panels. Natural lava stone signage at the entrance and on the lawns replaces traditional plastic and metal signs. The decor is low emission paint, all the artwork produced by local artists to ensure a low carbon-footprint and there are recycling bins for guests to use. Left over food scraps are composted to create a fertilizer for use on hotel plants and lawns. Bathrooms feature low-flow showerheads and dual flush toilets. The hotel is more of a prototype of what green could be rather than the design for any specific hotel but it is an intriguing look at the variety of green options available for hotels.

Conservation International, Charity Of The Day

Conservation International has been protecting our earth creatures for the last two decades. They operate on the simple principal that when human beings live harmoniously with nature instead of exploiting it, both will thrive. Their website lists a shocking statistic that I wasn't aware of, every twenty seconds one species becomes extinct!! That's a pace a thousand times faster than has ever been seen during Earth's history! How can this be happening? Climate change and habitat destruction are to blame. Conservation International is on the front line of the battle to save creatures that are in peril. They conducted the first ever Global Amphibian Assessment, a study which provided vital information on the state of every amphibian species on earth! They are currently doing similar groundbreaking research on sharks. This is one of the hardest working and most exceptional charities I've read about, visit their fabulous website (tons of amazing video and pictures) to sign petitions and see the many ways you can donate.

Deborah Lindquist Skull Cardigan

While watching Oprah today I noticed environmentalist Sophie Uliano was wearing a cardigan by one of my favorite "green" designers. Deborah Lindquist has been the stylist to the stars for years, she has dressed everyone from Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson to Gwen Stefani and Sharon Stone. Her signature line features the latest, most in demand fabrics like recycled cashmere, paired with today's hottest symbols like skulls and roses. Her style is nonchalant and relaxed, yet classically elegant. Her recycled cashmere cardigan is to die for, it features a skull applique and charming pearl buttons. Fabulous! This must have is available online for $286. Enjoy!

Join Reef Check in their plight to preserve one of natures most magnificent wonders!

Designer SIGG Bottles To Stop Global Warming

Plastic water bottles just aren't cool anymore, what with the environment falling apart and landfills filling up at breakneck speed. Sigg bottles have been a staple of many a "green" water drinker for years, and now in the name of fighting global warming they've gone designer. In a collaboration between Elle magazine and environmental activist Laurie David 14 designers (including names like Donna Karan, Kenneth Cole, and Stella McCartney) have each designed a Sigg bottle and put it up for auction, with the proceeds benefiting StopGlobalWarming.org.

Which one is your favorite? Mine would have to be the one by DVF, followed by a close second of Derek Lam's.

Macy's Makes Some Green Moves Just in Time for Earth Day

Next up in the oh-look-we-are-green-too category comes Macy's which has announced that they will start using shopping bags made in part with recycled paper at its Macy's stores and biodegradable packaging for online shipments. The shopping bags will be made from paper that uses 30% recycled material and will be 100% recyclable. The previous Macy's bags were laminated and not recyclable, which is a big deal when you consider. Macy's uses more than 43 million handled shopping bags each year. Like other stores, Macy's will sell their own branded totes. The reusable cotton tote bags for $3.95, with $1 going to the National Park Foundation. On April 26, the first 100 to 150 customers at every Macy's store will receive a free reusable tote bag.

Better news is that macys.com and bloomingdales.com, are ditching those annoying synthetic packing peanuts in favor of biodegradable packing materials made from raw ingredients such as potato starch. In another green move, company plans to put solar panals on more than 30 of their stores, many in California. Other retailers making similar moves recently include eLuxury, which has stopped printing paper catalogs and Nordstrom which has introduced environmentally-friendly packing materials.
